Statistics from the Illinois Department of Human Services show that roughly 5% of all deaths in Illinois each year are related to alcohol or substance abuse. For many who are in the grips of alcohol or substance abuse, the path to recovery can seem daunting, if not impossible. Fortunately, there are plenty of treatment centers in the state of Illinois. While the path to recovery can be overwhelming, the first step towards a healthy life is knowing where to look.

Above and Beyond Family Recovery Center
Above and Beyond Family Recovery Center was started by a group of medical care professionals who had decades of experience. During their time working in the medical field, they realized that not everyone who needed help was getting it. The goal of Above and Beyond is to help anyone who needs it, regardless of economic status. This is evidenced by the fact that Above and Beyond will take patients who are not insured. They are able to do this through donations from the community.
As for the recovery itself, Above and Beyond uses therapy to help recovering addicts stay sober. This is done through what is called the Vestibule Intensive Outpatient Program (VOIP). Once enrolled in VOIP, patients will work with healthcare professionals to figure out the best method of therapeutic treatment for them. Patients will also learn REBT, Rational Emotive Behavior Theory. This theory will help patients understand how emotional disturbance can change their behavior, and offer coping mechanisms for how to deal with emotional disturbances.
Stepping Stones Treatment Center
Stepping Stones is a treatment facility that wants to treat as many people as they can of all economic backgrounds. The inpatient program could last anywhere from 14-21 days and offers 24-hour monitoring by highly trained professionals.
Stepping Stones also seeks to help those who might suffer from mental disabilities along with addiction. Those who choose to be a part of the intensive outpatient program will be participating in group activities and therapy. Once a patient is done with detox, they will find a comprehensive list of specialties at Banyan Treatment Centers. Those who prefer to try a traditional route can access a 12-step program through Banyan, while those who want to try something else can choose from several other types of therapies. This list includes a Biofeedback program that helps patients understand the way that their body is responding to sobriety. By understanding the body’s reaction to the absence of alcohol or drugs, patients are better able to cope with withdrawals and the desire to relapse.
Patients will also be able to mix this knowledge with DBT and CBT therapies. Banyan gives patients the ability to choose which type of therapy works best for them. Along with individual therapy, patients will also be able to access group and family therapy.
The Women’s Treatment Center
The Women's Treatment is ideal for young mothers who don’t want to be separated from their child during the recovery process. This can be done individually or in group settings. Care Addiction Center also believes in a holistic approach to rehabilitation. Because of this, they offer therapies outside of the common. Family members are encouraged to join therapy. Some of the therapy offered centers around watching movies, listening to music, or doing yoga. Patients at the Care Addiction Center will have access to master level therapists, registered nurses, and certified addiction counselors.
The Mathers Recovery Center is a specialized place for either those looking to get back behind the wheel. Those who have lost their license due to one or several DUIs can go through the DUI treatment program. Here, clients will learn all the necessary tools and outlets they need to satisfy the Secretary of State’s requirements to be able to operate a motorized vehicle. Mathers does not take this lightly. They believe in the safety of their client and the community as a whole.
Mathers also offers a variety of services to treat the underlying addiction itself. While they are not a methadone clinic, they do offer methadone maintenance and other forms of addiction therapy. This could come in several forms, such as:
- Buprenorphine implants
- Suboxone maintenance program
- Vivitrol maintenance program
- Psycho-Social rehab
Lutheran Social Services of Illinois
Lutheran Social Services of Illinois cover a lot of services that might be needed. One of those services is drug and alcohol rehabilitation. The program at LSSI is robust, offering patients a path from detox to sober living. Those who need medication-assisted detox will be afforded a 5 day stay under the supervision of medical professionals. After that, patients can opt to do an inpatient program for up to 28 days.
After this process is finished, LSSI has two locations for a Healthy Start Recovery Home. Patients will live here with meals provided for up to one year. The outpatient program is a peer-led 12-step program. Services are available for adolescents who struggle with addiction as well.
Those with legal issues such as DUIs can also find help at LSSI.
Latino Treatment Center
The Latino Treatment Center is an alcohol and substance abuse facility that caters to those who speak Spanish as a first language. They offer outpatient care for both adolescents and adults. Treatment Centers of Illinois
Treatment Centers of Illinois focus on those individuals who have been mandated by a court to use their services. While this is a less extensive program, it is good for those who need an affordable option or has to complete some form of education on alcohol or substance abuse before they can get on with their lives. Those who come to the Treatment Centers of Illinois will be evaluated for what the next steps are on their road to recovery, and will then be offered recommendations based on those evaluations.
Treatment Centers of Illinois also offer those with DUIs a path forward. Individuals will receive educational material about how to move forward legally and soberly.
Footprints to Recovery
Footprints to Recovery is equipped to deal with addiction from detox to recovery. Those who choose to use medical detox can do so at Footprints with medical professionals and a safe environment. This will ensure that a patient will be monitored during the initial and oftentimes scary stage of recovery. Choosing detox is advised for patients who have another medical condition (not related to mental health) on top of their addiction, or for patients who do not have a stable environment where they can detox on their own.
After the detox stage, Footprints offers several types of therapy. The partial hospitalization option will have patients at the Footprints medical center five days a week from 9 AM until 3 PM, offering both individual and group therapy. Patients will learn coping mechanisms and social skills in each while also having the opportunity to discuss things that might trigger their addiction.
Footprints will work with each patient to determine the appropriate amount of time spent in Partial Hospitalization. Patients can also use the outpatient program that will allow them to explore other areas of interest including yoga and stand-up comedy.
For those with severe addictions, a methadone clinic might be the preferred treatment. Medical Assisted Treatment (MAT) is able to help with addiction on two fronts: when the patient is going through detox, it will help with the pain that comes from withdrawal, and when the patient is through with detox, methadone can help keep cravings to a minimum.
Once the detox phase is complete, Symetria Recovery offers plenty of services to help a patient with continuing their recovery. Services provided range from an intensive outpatient program to relapse prevention and continuing care.
Rosecrance does a lot of what other rehab facilities do well, but what may be the most unique thing about Rosecrance is the Florian Program for Uniformed Service Personnel. This is a program for those serving on the front lines such as firefighters, doctors, law enforcement officers, correctional officers, military personnel, dispatchers, and paramedics. These jobs can be highly stressful, which can lead to addictive behavior.
The Florian Program was created by Daniel DeGyrse, a retired battalion chief who has 30 years experience working for the Chicago fire department and 30 years experience in addiction and mental health services. This program takes into account occupational factors when discussing mental health and substance abuse.
Family Recovery Center
The Family Recovery Center was opened in 2009 with the goal of serving an increasing need in the Chicago area. This is done through various forms of therapy and evidenced-based treatment. Adolescents who enter programs at the Family Recovery Center won't feel belittled. Treatments here are dictated by not only the medical professionals, but the patient themselves. The family of the patient won't feel left out in the dark either, as they will be included through each step of the process.
