Hotel California by the Sea was founded in 2014 by Carl Mosen and Kevin Mello in Orange County, California. The residential program is separated by age and gender. Clients in the residential program are each provided with a medical team to come up with the best solution for treatment. The Aviary Recovery Center has two locations in Missouri, each covering different needs. The Marion Gatley Association (MGA) has recovery centers all over the United States, including four in the Greater St. Louis region. They offer everything from detox to luxury inpatient services.

While clients will get excellent treatment through MGA, so will family members and loved ones. The treatment program of the MGA relies on a strong support system outside of the program. BASIC Inc. (Black Alcohol/Drug Service Information Center) was established in 1983 in St. Louis, Missouri to help those in the Black community recover from alcoholism. In 1994 they opened another location in New Orleans and broadened their treatment services to alcohol and substance abuse. This coincided with the crack epidemic. The founders of BASIC saw the necessity of a Black-only business because Black Americans who were addicted to alcohol or drugs also suffered from “cultural survival fatigue.”

While recovery is the goal with BASIC, they aim for much more. Clients can expect to go through traditional counseling and use the 12-step method to help stop addictive behavior, but can also expect to learn skills to start living a better and more full life. Along with recovery, the main focus of BASIC is increasing self-esteem, self-worth, and cultural-pride.

The ARCH House was founded in 1969 in Granite City, Illinois (just across the river from St, Louis) as an eight-bed recovery home for men suffering from alcoholism. It has since expanded to 21 beds, but the philosophy remains the same.

The treatment program at ARCH encourages residents to change in three ways. The first change is within the client themselves; this includes daily responsibilities, and exhibiting behavior that is dependable and predictable. Services at ARCH House are free due to funding received by the State of Illinois Department of Human Services, the Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse, the Madison and St. Clair County Mental Health Boards, the United Way, and donations. Bridgeway Behavioral Health has been in operation for over 35 years and has 12 locations in Missouri, most of those in the Greater St. Louis Region. The Midwest Institute for Addiction is an affiliate of Sana Lake Recovery Centers and has locations in Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois. The St. Louis location offers detox services and outpatient counseling.

At MIA, they think that having a multidisciplinary team is vital to recovery, so each client will have access to medical, mental, and behavioral services. The recovery program at MIA is called the “Quality of Life” approach because they look at all aspects of life during treatment, not just the addiction that brings a client through the doors. After patients go through medically-assisted detox, they will have the option to either enter an intensive inpatient treatment program, a partial-hospitalization program, or an intensive outpatient program. Harris House also offers transitional housing for those who aren’t quite ready to live on their own after treatment.

Oxford House is a national program of sober living homes that has been operating since 1975. The first Oxford House was in Silver Spring, Maryland, and since, over 2,400 more homes have been opened.

This is a self-sustaining model, which is why it has been so successful. Those who live in an Oxford House elect officials within the houses to meet with other Oxford Houses to help steer the program as a whole.

These elected positions last for six months. There is no maximum length of time that one can stay in an Oxford House. This is because the founders of Oxford House noticed that after someone in recovery would be forced to leave a halfway house, they would typically relapse within a month. The average stay at an Oxford House is one year. As long as a resident is completely sober and paying their share of the bills, they are free to stay as long as they would like.

It should be noted that this program is not for those who need detox or inpatient treatment. This is for individuals who are enrolled in an intensive outpatient, or outpatient program who are ready to take the next step in their recovery.

The Midwest Health Center is a treatment facility specifically for those with an addiction to opioids. They use a medication-assisted treatment program with the drug Suboxone. This helps clients with the pangs of withdrawal and with the cravings that come after.

Each client will complete an assessment upon arrival at the clinic. This assessment will help the staff of the MHC determine the proper treatment, highlighting goals and milestones each client wants to hit along the way. Scheduling is flexible, so anyone can find an outpatient treatment program that works for them.

The MoNetwork of Harm Reduction, Recovery, Support, and Reform has been in operation in the St. Louis area since 2013. It was founded by Chad Sabora and Robert Riley II, both men who have experience with addiction and the incarceration system.

Sabora has an educational background that includes law school and, more specifically, criminal and civil procedure. His experience is unique because he has seen both sides of the courtroom, as he is a recovering addict as well.

Sabora and Riley met after stints in jail while working in separate recovery centers. They soon formed MoNetwork. Riley has gone on to be the COO at another area center, while Sabora is sought out for his expertise by the likes of CNN, MSNBC, and NBC News with Brian Williams.

Centrec Care (The Center for Treatment, Rehabilitation, Education, and Counseling) was founded in 1986 after two-plus decades of studying and working in psychiatry by Dr. Mohammed A. Kabir.

After being taught and exposed to most treatments in mental health, alcohol, and substance abuse, he found most if not all treatments to be insufficient. This also led Dr. Kabir to invent a program called the “12-step Journey to Wellness” (not to be confused with the traditional 12-step program.)

This is a faith-based organization located in Old North St. Louis. Step Into the Light also offers catering services that are catered by a 5-star chef and the Step Into the Light Crew. Step into the Light is a non-profit organization.

Christian Hospital is a member of BJC, the largest medical provider in the city of St. Louis. The Christian Northeast location offers an intensive outpatient treatment program that meets twice a week and is facilitated by a licensed counselor or social worker. Christian Hospital also offers AA meetings for those who need it.

Plan Your Recovery is an outpatient telehealth service. This is an unconventional service as clients will not be signing up for a program, but instead for individual treatments. Clients will also be going to meetings via the internet, as opposed to in person. While PYR offers outpatient detox services, they specialize in individual and group therapy.

PYR offers specialized group therapy, such as group therapy for professionals. PYR also has a Family Group therapy that is free to the public.

Better Living is an alcohol and substance abuse treatment center that specializes in opioid treatment. They offer several different programs for different stages of recovery, from inpatient care for those addicted to opioids, to outpatient care for general substance abuse. Evidence-based treatment is used, which means that each client will have a treatment plan made specifically for them.

Center for Life Solutions is a medication-assisted treatment program for clients who have been addicted to alcohol or other substances. Suboxone, Methadone, and Naltrexone are the primary medicines used and require and require clients to visit the facility six days a week to receive treatment. Vivitrol injections are also available and require a client to show up to the facility once a month.

Clients are required to be signed up for and actively attending outpatient therapy to continue treatment at CLS.

The Crossroads Program is an outpatient treatment program specifically for adolescents and young adults. The duration of the program is 6-14 weeks, or until staff at Crossroads deem a client’s recovery sufficient enough to be discharged. Families are encouraged to be a part of recovery.

Programs are in place to teach parents about the 12-step program and other methods of treatment. Once a client has been discharged, parents will have access to free counseling to help maintain sobriety through the Crossroads Program.
