While the awesome expanses and endless horizons of the North Dakota prairies evoke a sense of freedom, many citizens of the Peace Garden State are trapped by the plight of addiction. Across all age demographics, rates of binge drinking and alcohol use disorder are amongst the highest in the country.

Opioid overdose fatalities have greatly increased in the past decade, and methamphetamine use has become so pervasive that in 2019 North Dakota’s Attorney General designated it as “…the most serious drug problem we have in the state”.

Thankfully, there are numerous rehabilitation centers in North Dakota that provide top-quality, compassionate treatment for people struggling with addiction. Those who are seeking help have access to a wide variety of recovery programs and services at many different pricing options and levels of care.

By drawing on the knowledge and personal experience of someone who has successfully overcome addiction, this partnership helps people surmount the challenges they face during recovery.

This service is based around a flexible, personalized approach that focuses on holistically improving all areas of clients’ lives. Peer coaches provide emotional support, teach effective coping strategies, and work together with clients to create a customized addiction management plan. They can also connect clients with local recovery resources and help them navigate clinical treatment programs.

Progress is measured via the organization’s proprietary Recovery Capital Index, which assesses changes in addiction health as well as other quality of life factors, such as family life and personal fulfillment.

As addiction is a chronic condition, there is no time constraint for completing the Face It TOGETHER program. There are also a variety of membership plans with graduating pricing, so clients can find a financially manageable level of support.

The Village Family Service Center runs its First Step Recovery program out of its central office in Fargo. Treatment is provided on an outpatient basis, and is available at several different levels of intensity, depending on patients’ specific needs.

For patients who require a highly structured rehabilitation program, the partial hospitalization option runs for twenty hours a week, Monday-Friday. Treatment consists of individual, group, and family therapy sessions, as well as educational lectures and videos.

The intensive outpatient and low-intensity outpatient programs follow a similar curriculum, but only require a commitment of nine and five hours a week, respectively — scheduling is also more flexible.

The First Step Recovery program also offers a Relapse Prevention Group for patients who have completed the primary care program. The group meets for two hours each week, and focuses on maintaining abstinence by developing recovery skills.

A six-week family counseling program is also available. Patients and their loved ones attend weekly therapy sessions while learning about conflict resolution and constructing a family recovery plan together.

For those who live outside of Fargo, The Village Family Service Center also has locations in Bismarck, Grand Forks, Devils Lake, and Minot. While these branches do not offer the First Step Recovery Program, they can refer you to local agencies and support groups.
