Amidst the stunning natural beauty of Wyoming’s rugged, untamed wilderness, many residents of the Cowboy State struggle with substance use. Opioid prescription and overdose rates are alarmingly high, while alcohol abuse costs the state nearly a billion dollars each year in health care and law enforcement expenses, in addition to lost productivity.

Thankfully, there are numerous rehabilitation centers in Wyoming that provide top-quality, compassionate treatment for people struggling with addiction. Those who are seeking help have access to a wide variety of recovery programs and services at many different pricing options and levels of care.

Peak Wellness Center runs an extensive network of addiction rehabilitation facilities across the state of Wyoming, with locations in Cheyenne, Laramie, Torrington, Wheatland, Pine Bluffs, and Guernsey. Founded in 1959, this LGBT-friendly organization is both CARF-accredited and certified by the Wyoming Department of Health. Utilizing the latest research and evidence-based methods, Peak Wellness Center provides comprehensive treatment for the physical, mental, and behavioral causes of addiction.

Their residential treatment option offers gender-specific inpatient programs, as well as specialized care for veterans and women with young children. For patients who require it, they can also facilitate a non-medical detoxification process during withdrawal.

Outpatient programming involves individual and group counseling, with an emphasis on setting realistic and achievable recovery goals while developing practical coping skills and peer support networks. Therapy is integrated with ongoing case management, psychiatric care, and medication-assisted treatment, if needed. Peak Wellness Center also offers support programs for families and children, as well as crisis intervention services and daily living assistance.

The primary drawback with Peak Wellness Center is that their staffing resources are stretched rather thin. Due to their massive client-base, wait times for booking an initial appointment are quite long —especially for a one-on-one therapy session.

Treatment involves daily exercise, meditation, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) support groups, and individual and group therapy sessions focused on building practical life skills and coping with grief and loss.

In Sheridan, Volunteers of America runs The Life House and The Gathering Place, which provide residential treatment programs for men and women, respectively. Both centers offer a welcoming, home-like setting, with on-site recreational facilities, community activities, and childcare services, if needed. Patients participate in a structured program of 30 hours of individual and group counseling each week. While primarily based on the 12-Step system, their therapeutic approach also incorporates CBT, Motivational Interviewing, Seeking Safety, Solution Focused Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

As a voluntary adjunct to treatment, residential patients can choose to take either the Christian Enhancement or Native American Cultural Enhancement options —the former involves Bible study classes and daily devotional services, while the latter focuses on indigenous spiritual practices, including tribal ceremonies and therapeutic sweat lodges.

Finally, Volunteers of America also operates two Recovery Homes in Sheridan for recovering men and women who require the continued support of a transitional living environment. Rent is $400 per month, which includes utilities, internet, and on-campus case management and clinical services —though residents must purchase their own food.
